Throughout my studies I took the overlooked medium of biro and developed an illustrative style using detailed levels of contrast and shading. Filling unusual forms inspired by facial features with a repetitive technique of layering biro, I have created a recognisable artwork style which is relevant to my contextual practice of cellular structures and the human anatomy; the interior and exterior of the body.

I am fascinated by imperfections. In terms of design, when things are perfect or identical to others of the same product, there is a lack of empathy that comes alongside it. It feels machine made and thereby has no human emotion attached. When things are slightly “off” or unique to other products, it connotes a hands on approach; it is one of a kind.

These abstract figurative drawings highlight the beauty of ugliness or being different to what is considered “normal”.
